What is a Root Canal?

If you're experiencing pain or swelling in the area of an untreated cavity or damaged tooth, chances are it's because of an infection. A root canal is a common treatment for this dental issue, but root canals have a not-so-pleasant reputation among those who have experienced the procedure. Dr. Karen Tritinger-Young with Lakeside Dentistry is committed to providing you with comfort and assurance for your Yakima, WA, root canal.

Contrary to general belief, root canals are performed to treat the pain, not cause any further discomfort. There is a process in which an infection is treated, which must first begin with an examination performed by an endodontist, a dental specialist who treats dental pulp (nerve tissue inside the tooth that extends to your jawbone). Pulp delivers blood to your teeth, which is how sensitivity to foods and beverages is felt.

Depending on the seriousness of decay or infection, the tooth may or may not be restorable. In the case of the tooth not responding to treatment, the tooth should be removed.

The Procedure

  1. The infected area will be numbed (anesthesia) by a needle to perform the treatment.
  2. To begin the root canal therapy, your Yakima, WA, dentist, Dr. Tritinger-Young will then drill (with a very small head) a portion of the top of the damaged tooth in order to reveal the pulp.
  3. A surgical instrument (referred to as a file) is inserted into the tooth canal to remove the infected pulp. Once cleaned, it is then flushed with a sterilizing solution to keep the infection from spreading.
  4. The removed portion at the top of the tooth must be filled through restorative dentistry.

After the root canal therapy, you may experience discomfort or sensitivity which can be alleviated by over-the-counter pain relievers.

A follow-up visit with Dr. Tritinger-Young is necessary to ensure the infection is gone. If you believe you may need a root canal, call Lakeside Dentistry in Yakima, WA, at (509) 494-0121.
